Focus on Cabbage Town

sketch_cabbagetown In 1840, thousands of Irish immigrants settled in Cabbagetown, fleeing the potato famins in their homeland. Since they were poor, they had to grow cabbages on their front lawns in order to put food on the table, which is how this district got its name.

The Depression of the 1930’s hit the working class community hard. It became the worst anglo saxon slum in North America. In the 1950’s these houses were replaced by the Regent Park housing development.

In the 1970’s and 1980’s Cabbagetown was revived by new home buyers. They restored much of the neighbourhoods fine collection of Victorian homes. Cabbagetown is now considered one of Toronto’s most gentrified neighbourhoods. Also, it one of the most sough-after postal codes in the city. Cabbagetown contains a large number of bars, cafes, restaurants and the occasional antique store. For more on the history of Cabbage town click HERE and HERE.
