Originally, William Allan (one of early Toronto’s wealthiest citizens) owned the Moss Park neighbourhood, which was part of a 100 acre park lot. He built a huge mansion on his estate in 1830. The name of this mansion was Moss Park. The city park is now where the mansion used to be.
Allan left his Moss Park estate to his son George when he passed in 1853. His son would late become the Mayor of Toronto. The estate was later subdivided and the area was soon known for its Victorian homes.
Little is remains of the original Moss Park neighbourhood. In 1962 its houses were demolished, clearing room for the Moss Park Apartment Buildings. More on Moss Park history.
Now, Moss Park is hampered by crime. Local aid agencies are working to turn the area around, but progress has been slow. Although, there are many little hideen streets, such as Trinity St, it’s a mix of old and new townhouses. This area generally consists of smallish townhouses, mixing with condo and loft developments.
