Focus on Riverdale

Riverdale homes are located in an extremely hip and happening area in the east end of Toronto. Its boundaries are the Don River to the east, Danforth Avenue to the north, Jones Avenue to the west and Lake Shore Boulevard to the south. Homes in this area are extremely desirable and located right near a booming retail area, especially on Queen Street. The style of architecture on these homes can go from Victorian to Edwardian, many of which are completely renovated and some that still need some home improvements.

Riverdale was a very small village until the Grand Trunk Railway started coming through it in the 1850’s. It brought business and employment along with it, creating expansion as well as a boost to the economy. Riverdale north of Queen Street was not developed until 1884 and at that time was called Riverside; it was named after the park of the same name that is still a landmark in the Riverdale community. Its residential growth increased greatly after the construction of the Prince Edward Viaduct since it provided a connection to downtown Toronto.

Riverdale is a large, multi-culturally diverse community that has something to offer for everyone. It is a very popular area with young professionals and first- time buyers. It offers homes with a large range of price points, very close to the TTC and downtown Toronto. The average home can go from the $400,000 range and up.

Some highlights of the Riverdale community include:

  • Riverdale Collegiate Institute is the community’s high school
  • There are three large parks in the area: Riverdale Park, Withrow Park and Jimmie Simpson Park, offering acres of green space.
  • Montcrest School is a very nice private school, in operation since 1961, offering classes for students with special needs.
  • There is an area in Riverdale called Chinatown, with many Chinese restaurants and other shopping and retail stores located around Broadview and Gerrard.
  • Some of the neighbourhood hotspots are the Riverdale Perk Café, which offers a nice atmosphere, pastries and small meals and Bill’s Lobster, a top seafood store for gourmet chefs.

Riverdale homes are now selling for higher than in previous years because of the close proximity to parks, public transit, and hip restaurants, bars and boutiques. Homes have loads of architectural character, whether it is a row house, a newer townhouse, a brick semi or a single- family detached home. Riverdale homes can also offer access to some of the best schools in Toronto, a definite advantage to this remarkable district.
